In June 2005, at the age of 21, Jake stood on the summit of Mount Everest and achieved his dream of becoming the youngest man in the world to complete the Seven Summits (the highest mountain on each continent) and the youngest Briton to climb Everest. Jake also broke the World Record for climbing the 48 highest peaks of Continental USA in the shortest time possible. The Freestyle ® Challenge 48 was completed in just 23 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes as Jake reached the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine. The Englishman shaved a huge 5 days off the existing record of 29 days.
"I strongly believe that each and every one of us has the opportunity to light small fires in the darkness and make a difference to those around us."
A world record breaker
Starting by watching the Millennium dawn from the summit of Kilimanjaro when he was 15, Jake completed the challenge on the 4th June 2005, when aged 21 and 134 days he became the youngest Briton to climb Everest, and the youngest man in the world to complete the 7 Summits (Bass variant). In 2006 Jake set a record of the fastest ascent of the highest mountain in every State in the contiguous USA (The Lower 48), which involved 15,000 miles of driving, around 100,000ft of climbing and 350 miles of trekking, all in 23 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes. To date he's visited 49 States and their highpoints out of 50 - only Hawaii left!
In 2009 Jake attempted K2 - reaching 7700m before turning back due to poor snow conditions. The account of this expedition was made into the award winning documentary - K2: Siren of the Himalayas. He's visited the highest point in every county in England (all 82 in 7 days, 4 hours and 20 minutes). He's been to 41 countries in the world, and climbed to the highest point in 21 of them (and counting). He's a commissioned officer in the British Army Reserve and has served on operations in Afghanistan.
